The King's Speech is de grote winnaar van de BAFTA's, de belangrijkste Britse filmprijzen, geworden.
In Londen zijn de BAFTA's, de Britse variant van de Oscars, uitgereikt. The King's Speech werd de grote winnaar van de avond. De Britse film over de stotterende koning George VI won zeven beeldjes, onder meer in de categorieën Best Film en Best Leading Actor. Toy Story 3 werd uitgeroepen tot de beste animatiefilm.
Colin Firth won zijn tweede BAFTA op rij.
Televisiepresentator Jonathan Ross mocht net als vorig jaar de ceremonie in goede banen leiden. Op een gegeven moment moest hij even ingrijpen toen actrice Rosamund Pike dreigde de enveloppe met de winnaar te snel te openen. Verder verliep de prijsuitreiking zonder problemen, hoewel er veel winnaars niet persoonlijk aanwezig waren. Zo was de zwangere Natalie Portman er niet toen haar naam werd afgeroepen. Haar prijs werd in ontvangst genomen door regisseur Darren Aranofsky.
Hoofdrolspeler Colin Firth kreeg zelfs een staande ovatie toen hij een BAFTA kreeg als Best Leading Actor. Ook vorig jaar won hij het begeerde beeldje. The Social Network , dat vorige maand nog vier Golden Globes mee naar huis mocht nemen, won nu in de categorieën Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director en Best Editing. Inception scoorde vooral in de meer technische categorieën.
De toekomstige Batman-schurk Tom Hardy kreeg de Rising Star Award voor beste opkomende talent, terwijl de 88-jarige Christopher Lee de Academy Fellowship kreeg voor zijn volledige carrière. Hij speelde mee in kaskrakers als Star Wars , The Lord Of The Rings , The Man With The Golden Gun en Dracula .
