The Revenantvan regisseur Alejandro G. Iñárritu leidt met 12 nominaties de Oscarrace, gevolgd doorMad Max: Fury Roadmet 10 nominaties. Dit maakte de Academy vanmiddag Nederlandse tijd bekend.
The Revenantis daarmee de grote favoriet in de Oscarrace. De film kreeg onder meer nominaties in de categorieën beste film, beste regisseur (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), beste acteur (Leonardo DiCaprio), beste acteur in een bijrol (Tom Hardy), beste cinematografie en beste montage. Voor DiCaprio is het de vijfde keer dat hij is genomineerd. Nog niet eerder won hij het gouden beeldje.
Mad Max: Fury Roadkreeg vandaag tien nominaties, waaronder beste film, beste regisseur (George Miller), beste cinematografie en beste montage. De andere nominaties zijn allemaal technische.
Op de derde plaats staatThe Martianmet zeven nominaties, waaronder beste film, beste acteur (Matt Damon), beste bewerkte script en beste visuele effecten. Regisseur Ridley Scott kreeg echter geen nominatie.
Grote verrassing is het ontbreken van nominaties voor beste film en beste regie voorCarol. Vooraf werd verwacht dat regisseur Todd Haynes genomineerd zou worden. Cate Blanchett kreeg voor haar rol in de film wel een nominatie, evenals Ed Lachman voor zijn camerawerk.
In de categorie beste animatiefilm is Inside Outde grote favoriet, net alsSon of Saul als beste niet-Engelstalige film enAmyals beste documentaire.
Er waren verder geen belangrijke nominaties voorStar Wars: The Force Awakens, op een paar technische na. Dit had een grote boost aan de al jaren afnemende kijkcijfers van de Oscaruitreiking kunnen geven. Daarnaast kreeg Aaron Sorkin voor zijn scherpe script vanSteve Jobsook geen nominatie. Ook Michael Keaton (Spotlight) en Michael B. Jordan (Creed) vielen buiten de boot.
De Oscars worden zondag 28 februari uitgereikt in het Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.. De ceremonie is dit jaar voor het eerst sinds lange tijd niet live in Nederland op tv te volgen.
